A letter from the director:

The primary purpose of the NJGC is to provide minority youth of the Peninsula with the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf and to facilitate their personal and academic development. The game of golf has proven itself to be an excellent vehicle to train and motivate youth to become better people and students. The Newtown Junior Golf Club is designed to provide long-term, consistent exposure to the game of golf, and not just a one-time series of activities. It is our belief that with a viable golf program, in which you have a number of youngsters participating, they will attract other kids and provide support to one another.

The program is multi-racial and coed, and includes academic counseling, social activities, personal development counseling and golf instruction and play. It is part of an effort to keep minority and disadvantaged children, many from broken families, to develop positive self-images, improved interpersonal skills, and complete high school. Golf, which is long on self assessment, civility, good sportsmanship as well as competition, can have a most affirmative impact on youth, particularly when contrasted with other options of contact and confrontational team sport.

I, as a part of a joint effort with the Newtown Planning Team and the Neighborhood Civic Club, Inc, formed the club in April of 1998. Joining in the effort is Ms. Mary Johnson, President of the civic club, Mrs. Martha Miller, Hampton Golf Course Manager, Mr. Rick DuVall, Mr. Larry Crawford, Mr. Walter Washington and Mr. James Flythe.

The NJGC scheduled over seventeen activities in the first year of 1998.
The program is and continues to be financed by contributions from local businesses and individual contributions.
The years to come will bring many more exciting activities and competitions.

Thank you for your interest and remember...all they need is opportunity!
